The USS Oriskany
The USS Oriskany was completed in and launched in 1945. Her first mission was in 1950, at Guantanamo Bay during the Korean conflict. After years of serving her country she was decommissioned in Sept 1976. In 2003 the Navy decided to use her as an artificial reef. In 2006 she was sunk off the Gulf Coast and became the largest artificial reef.
On the morning of May 17, 2006 the Oriskany Reef was deployed at a depth of 212 feet. The Oriskany is sitting on the seafloor with the bow facing due south. It is strongly recommended that novice divers get additional training before attempting this dive due to the depth, currents and the unpredictability of the structure of the Oriskany itself. Below are some measurements taken May 18, 2006:
