If you believe that New Orleans is the birthplace of Mardi Gras in the United States, you would be wrong !
Mobile, AL is the birthplace of Mardi Gras and has the oldest celebration going back to the Colonial period when the French made their mark on the city of Mobile. The Striker's Independent Society is the oldest continuing mystic society in the U.S and the Cowbellians Society was the first to celebrate with a parade. With rake, shovels and you guessed it, cowbells, the Cowbellians Society led the first parade named Heathen Gods and Goddess.
And New Orleans certainly doesn't have Joe Cain Day. Joe Cain is credited with reviving the Mardi Gras Parade that is celebrated today.
Joe Cain died in 1904 but he not forgotten, oh no ! Every Joe Cain Day, Cain's Merry Widows, dressed in black, and hiding under black veils
lay a wreath on Joe's grave. There loud wails are only interrupted with cries of "Joe loved me the most." "No, he loved me the most".
They return to drink a toast to Joe Cain where all is not forgiven. To learn more about the unique and colorful history of Mardi Gras
visit the Mobile Carnival Museum, housed in the Bernstein-Bush Mansion on Government Street. Inside You can check out the finery of past carnival queens and jesters. See displays of "throws" such as doubloons and beads. Best of all, the interactive exhibits let you experience the thrill of riding on a float and lobbing beads to the little girl shouting "Throw me some beads, mister !"

Burris Farm Market---On your drive back be sure to allow time to stop off at Burris Farm Market in Loxley for a dish of the world's best strawberry shortcake and bring back to your condo some locally grown produce. Accordint to CBS Morning News, "A family-owned produce market there is a local landmark. It attracts loyal customers from miles around who proclaim it as the best site for produce. Greg Burris sells just about every kind of fruit and vegetable you can imagine. But this time of year, the featured attraction is Silver King corn, a special variety of white sweet corn that only ripens for these few weeks. The corn is picked fresh every morning at sun-up, and according to Burris, you can't go wrong. "It's like popping the cork on a good bottle of wine," says Burris. Whatever its secret, customers can't seem to get enough of the Silver King corn. But they'd be wise to save room for Kay Burris' Key Lime Pie.
"[It] is a real good summer dessert," says Burris. In Loxley, Ala., there lays a farm market that some would argue is one of the best in its field. "
