Orange Beach "Catman" Backcountry Trail Halloween Hayride
CATMAN TRAIL. It was a dark and stormy night, well, not really. It was 8:30 PM, unseasonable warm, one might say muggy, and the hay wagon had just arrived. It was Halloween night and some very good friends and I were about to venture down the legendary Catman Trail. Located behind Public's in Orange Beach, I had noticed a steady stream of hikers and bicycle riders coming and going from the trail. And then someone told me about The Catman! It seems, during the depression, three men went to live in the wilderness around County Rd. 12. When the men were not seen in quite some time, folks went looking for them. Two graves were found but what had happened to the third man? It was shortly after the discovery of the graves that a mysterious creature, half-man, half-cat began to stalk old County Rd. 12. Moms began to tell their teenage children that it was very dangerous to be in a parked car anywhere on County Rd 12. The Catman will get you if you don't come straight home! Did we see the Catman on our ride? ... Well, I didn't see a lot because my nose was buried in a bale of hay after some harpy in a white gown in bad need of a haircut came flying out at me with a raised knife dripping blood. Catman Trail is part of the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail and offers locals and visitors a safe trail to hike or bike. Take a walk through the maritime forest to see the native plants and wildlife. Flowers such as bog sunflowers and pitcher plants can be found in season. Deer, foxes and otters make their home in the backcountry. You might even catch a glimpse of a bobcat.
Park benches, even a swing, are placed along the trail for those needing to "sit a spell" and a clean rest room facility can be found at the halfway point.
Some of what we saw on the Catman Trail on Haloween Night !
