It's BIG! It's airy! It's fun! The Hawianian Islands' hand signal for "Hang Loose" is a perfect logo for this large causal eatery by Michael Caruthers that offers great food, a friendly wait staff and casual entertainment. It was a beautiful spring day when Lundy and I grabbed a late lunch at the Hangout in Gulf Shores. The atmosphere of the restaurant matched the warm balmy day. Lundy had the Shaka-Shaka Shrimp, while I chose the grouper Yo Boy ( it's Yo, not Po, at the Hangout). For the grouper Yo Boy, the menu read lightly breaded and fried. And I am glad to report that is exactly how the sandwich was served. Grouper is a delicate fish and can be overpowered with grease when fried. The Hangout's Yo Boy was just about perfect! Golden Grouper. Golden fries. Makes me happy! Lundy ordered the Shaka-Shaka Shrimp that declared " spicy " on the menu. When she handed me a shrimp to try saying " Really, it's not hot. ", I declined. The last time Lundy told me " Really, it's not hot." my mouth was puckered for 24 hours. I finally took one bite. She was right! The shrimp were delicious, tangy and crisp. The Hangout created a first-Lundy and I agreed on " spicy ". Now, for dessert, if you like chocolate you have got to order the Choo-Chee Chocolate Lovin' Spoon Cake. The only fault I found with the Hangout was their menu did not do justice to this little bit of heaven. Do not let the word "pudding " throw you off. I tend to think Bill Cosby and J-e-l-l-o when I see the word pudding . This cake is a densely textured, rich, melt- in-your-mouth wonder. It was just an enjoyable meal. Everything from the singer's laid back LA songs ( Lower Alabama ), the great food and friendly staff made for a perfect meal on a perfect day.
